Our Favourite Canadian Travel Destinations
OH CANADA!
Each year on Canada Day (July 1st) we gather together with Ben’s family at the Kennedy farm just North of Toronto. It’s like something from a movie, with 50+ family members and friends all meeting at the original family farm. Everyone comes dressed in red and white, with BBQ food, sweet treats, and baseball gloves in hand. So kind of them to all join us in celebrating our wedding anniversary, and throwing us a party every year…(haha).
This past year (2020) our celebrations looked much different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So, rather than gathering everyone all together, this year we reflected and reminisced about some of our favourite spots in this beautiful country we’re so incredibly fortunate to live in.
10. Montreal, Quebec
For a little getaway at Christmas in 2017, we headed to the old city of Montreal for the first time. My family cottage is in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, about 1.5 hours South East of Montreal, but we always just drive by on the highway in order to get to the lake as soon as possible. So, we decided to spend some time exploring one of Canada’s oldest cities during our first Christmas as a married couple! Although there were record breaking freezing temperatures (felt like -46 degrees Celsius with the windchill one day- yikes), we were still able to walk everywhere and see all the beautiful historic sites.
9. Ottawa, Ontario
When we were engaged, we dreamed about moving away from the Greater Toronto Area and heading East towards Ottawa. Although life had other plans, we constantly head back to Ottawa to visit family and friends. One thing we really appreciate is that no matter the season in Ottawa, there is always something to do! Some of our personal favourites include Winterlude, the Canadian War Museum, Parliament Hill, and the Tulip Festival.
8. Eastern Townships, Quebec
I have spent every summer here since I was young, and I plan to continue that tradition for the rest of my life! The Townships have so much to offer visitors, from incredible mountain hikes to little local farmers markets, world famous libraries to suspension bridges. Some of our favourite towns and villages include Coaticook, Stanstead & Ayers Cliff. (Click on each town for more info!)
7. Dumheller, Alberta
Drumheller was unlike anything we had ever seen before! It is only 1.5 hours from Calgary, and so worth the drive! The landscape changes drastically within such a short time frame, and I guarantee you will not be disappointed! Be sure to check out the Royal Tyrrell Museum to learn all about the numerous dinosaur bones discovered in the badlands each year. Honourable mention for number seven goes to the City of Calgary!
6. Vancouver, British Columbia
Back in 2016, this is actually where we got engaged. Vancouver has it all- mountain views, salt water breeze, gorgeous parks and more! We’ve actually listed some of our favourite spots here! If you’re only there for a short period of time, be sure to check out Stanley Park! It is absolutely beautiful!
5.Quebec City, Quebec
We’ve been to Quebec City a couple times now, and are always amazed by its historic charm. Some of our favourite spots include Quartier Petit Champlain and the Plains Of Abraham. Be sure to check out our post all about a weekend getaway to Quebec City here!
4. St. Johns, Newfoundland & Labrador
Fun Fact: Our trip to St. Johns was incredibly spontaneous.
Back in 2015, Ben won two round trip tickets with Porter Airlines anywhere that they fly! We wanted to go somewhere that we might not go on our own, so we picked Newfoundland! The weather stereotypes are true (cold and rainy, even in July), however that did not dampen our experience at all! The colourful houses, stunning landscape, and amazing wildlife was well worth the trip! If you’d like some tips on what to “sea”, eat and do in St. Johns, click here!
3. Prince Edward Island
As soon as we left PEI, we were googling the housing market to see if we could purchase a vacation home on this stunning island. (Spoiler: we could not, maybe one day though!) The countless beaches, the red sand and cliffs, Anne of Green Gables, and more! Prince Edward Island was one of our favourite destinations we have ever traveled to, and we cannot wait to go back! Some of our favourite destinations include on the island included Summerside, Cavendish & Charlottetown.
2. Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island,Nova Scotia
On our road trip out east in the Summer of 2019, we spent three days in Cape Breton Island National Park. Some of our favourite places include Ingonish Beach & Middle Head Hiking Trail, Inverness and Cheticamp. Be sure to leave yourself some time to do the Skyline Trail hike!
Drumroll please…. our favourite Canadian travel destination is…..
Banff National Park
Upon arrival in Banff, we quickly realized why it is one of the top travel destinations in the world! Man, SO BEAUTIFUL! The crystal blue waters, towering mountain peaks, and adorable little towns… it is unlike any place we’ve ever experiences. If you’re heading to Banff soon, we’ve outlines the top 10 things you need to do in the park here!
