One Week in Quebec City
When we first got engaged, we dreamed of all the places we wanted to go on our honeymoon. Hawaii? A resort in the Caribbean? Italy? The list went on and on. However, seeing as we were married on Canada 150, it seemed appropriate to explore a new place within our own beautiful country! Also, as two 23 year old recent university grads, we wanted to be financially responsible and choose a place that fit within our budget (...look at us, adulting and everything).
So, after much research, we decided on a week in Quebec City, Quebec!
Many of the blogs and websites we looked at prior to booking described Quebec City as a beautiful city, with old European charm, plenty to see and a rich history. It also appealed to us because it was close enough to drive (11 hours), but was a completely different landscape and culture for us small town Ontario kiddos to explore.
So, if you’re looking for a Canadian getaway- Quebec City is a great place to check out!
Where to Stay
We stayed at an adorable micro- apartment in the old part of Quebec City. It had a cute little loft, a gorgeous exposed brick wall, and stunning old huge windows. It was stocked with everything we needed, and offered an incredible old city charm. However, what we appreciated the most was how close it was to everything! We were able to walk everywhere! Before you rush off to some of the classic Quebec City sights, we recommend strolling the nearby Rue Saint-Jean, as it has so many adorable shops, cafes, restaurants and libraries just steps from your door! What To Do
Plains of Abraham
This beautiful green space was only a 15 minute walk from our apartment rental! We spent many afternoons strolling the gardens, and relaxing in the warm sunshine. If you are a history nerd like me, there is a ton of history to explore! This site was actually where the Battle of the Plains of Abraham took place in September of 1759, and was an important moment in Canadian history. Quartier Petit Champlain
When you step into this little area of the old city, it feels like you have gone back in time (or at least overseas to Europe!). Old stone buildings, and cobblestone streets. This is a must see in Quebec City! While you’re there, be sure to check out Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church, a beautiful old church located in Place-Royale, right in the middle of the old city town square. With every turn, you encounter something beautiful and scenic- so be sure to bring your camera and comfortable footwear!
Ben & I found that this area got very crowded during the day, especially during the busy summer tourist season. So, on our final day in the city, we woke up early and actually made it down to the old city by 7am one day to enjoy the quiet, deserted streets.
If you need some directions on how to get there, click here to access the Quartier Petit Champlain website. And if you’re staying at our recommended Air BnB, it is only a 20 minute walk (with lots to see along the way!)
Fairmont Le Château Frontenac
This luxury hotel is a signature sight in the Quebec City skyline! There are so many incredible places to view it from, including the boardwalk right outside of it, as well as from down below in the Old City.
Observatoire de la Capitale
Check out this tourist attraction for incredible views of the city and the surrounding area. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast before you go to ensure you have prime viability. Click here to purchase your tickets in advance.
Explore the Streets of the Upper Town
Only 8 minutes from the Air BnB we recommend is Porte Saint-Jean (Rampart Gate), an entrance to the old upper fortified city. Fun fact, did you know that Quebec City is actually a UNESCO world heritage site because it is one of the first European settlements in the Americas. It is also the only fortified city in Canada! So, enter the gates and explore! Shops, restaurants, beautiful old buildings, and tons of street artists await!
Bon Voyage!
