24 Hours in London, England
London Calling!
It seems pretty surreal to think that a little more than a month ago I was in the U.K.
After weeks of planning, I was flying to England to meet up with one of my best friends, Alex, for March Break. Moments after touching down at Heathrow Airport, I realized how different the world had become in 7 hours and how rapidly things were changing due to COVID-19. Our trip was cut short, however I was able to experience 24 hours in London with an amazing friend.
Obviously travel is not possible right now. However, when the time is right and it is safe to explore abroad again, there are a couple things you need to add to your list for London, England.
Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour
Firstly, I feel the need to say that given our limited amount of time in London, a Hop On- Hop Off Tour Bus Tour was the best way to see all the sights! We traveled with the Original Bus Tour, as they had many different route options that allowed us to see so much of the city.
The customer service on the buses was incredible, and given that we were there in March, the buses were not busy at all. What was even more amazing is that were were able to get tickets that allowed us to tour London by bus, and by BOAT! It was so cool to see London from the Thames. I highly recommend using a tour company if you’re in London for a short period of time.
Borough Market
If you’re a foodie, this is somewhere you need to stop! This stop was all Alex’s idea, and I am so glad she suggested it! We were both blown away by the different varieties of food. Everything smelled amazing, and it was so difficult to decide what to try. We went for some traditional British fare, a salted beef sandwich. Yum!
Tower Bridge
Although most assume that this famous bridge is London bridge, it is not; it is Tower Bridge! A famous stop for many tourists in London. If you did stop for a bite at the Borough Market, the bridge is a short walk away. You can actually walk across the bridge, and spend some time exploring our next recommendation; the Tower of London.
Tower of London
Due to time constraints, we were not able to go into the Tower this trip. However, back in 2007, I spent an entire afternoon inside learning all about its unique, and slightly dark, history. If you’re a history nerd like myself, you should definitely check this place out.
London Eye
A giant ferris wheel with glass pods? Yes, sign me up! The London Eye offers incredible views of the London area, especially parliament! The pods are huge, allowing 25 people in each. If you have more than 24 hours in London, check the forecast ahead of time to ensure that visibility is clear.
Parliament
When I think of London, Elizabeth Tower comes to mind, (often mistakenly called Big Ben…. fun fact: Big Ben is actually the bell inside the tower). Even if you’re able to just drive by, or have the time to explore, it is a great place to check out…. And snap a photo or too. Please note, they are under a major renovation right now, so it might not be as scenic as you’d like.
Westminster Abbey
Major Royal Wedding vibes when strolling up to this beauty. After seeing Westminster Abbey so much on TV regarding events with the Royal Family, it was so cool to see it in person. If you want to pop inside, be sure to check their closing times daily.
Notting Hill
This was one of my personal favourite places to check out on our 24 hours in London. Bright beautiful houses, colourful storefronts, and winding streets filled with adorable shops, cafes and restaurants. We checked out Farm Girl, an adorable, cozy, and picture perfect spot for lunch. Yum!
Trafalgar Square
Our first stop of the day when we hopped off the bus for the first time. I had been here with my dad back in 2007, and wanted to go back for old times sake. Not too much has changed over the years at Trafalgar Square, but thank goodness my fashion sense has (see old photos for reference). Nothing says 2007 like an American Eagle knit paired with jean shorts from Garage… ahh memories.
Kensington Palace
I felt like a princess strolling through Hyde Park and coming upon Kensington Palace. The spring flowers were in full bloom (meanwhile there was still snow in Ontario), and locals were out biking, running and walking in the sunshine. It was a beautiful sight to behold.
Gordon’s Wine Bar
Wine & Cheese in an old wine cellar? Okay! The vibe of this place was so cool, the wine was amazing and the cheese board was delicious. What a place to have a girls night out!
Additional Interesting Sights…
Piccadilly Circus, red telephone booths, and more!
London was a seriously a photographers dream, and I hope to be back there someday.
